Annotation

The collective monograph prepared by the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the centenary of the Great Russian Revolution of 1917 examines the key issues in the history of the revolution in the period from the eve of the fall of the monarchy to the adoption of the first Soviet Constitution of 1918, i.e. the creation of a new state. The authors, who represent the country's leading scientific centers, pay special attention to the historiographical understanding of the events. The February and October phases of the revolution are considered in the book as a single and logically interconnected process. This approach allows us to overcome the dichotomy of glorifying myth-making ("revolution is the locomotive of history") and ideologically committed negativism ("revolution is absolute evil") that persists in the modern public consciousness. Revolutionary events are considered as a determining factor influencing the political, social, economic and cultural life of the country. The influence of the revolution on the collapse of the unified Russian state and the change in the country's international status is also studied. The book is intended for social scientists, teachers and students of higher educational institutions, as well as anyone interested in Russian history.
