Hagia Sophia the Mosque
Annotation

The 2020 conversion of Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia, a key secular structure and as such an emblem of modern Turkey, to mosque, is a milestone for the resurgence of radical religiousnessand a landmark decision directly enabled by the current president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The article looks at the historical roots of this move and seeks to show that it is a part of a clerical tradition that, while aided by the current policymakers, itself stretches in a direct and logical line back to the Ottoman Empire.
