Estonians and the Caucasus: from Terra Incognita to Terra Promissa. Based on the Materials of the Estonian Press at the Turn of the 19th — 20th Centuries
Annotation

In the “Migration Age” called so in the Estonian Human Development Report 2016/2017, Estonia and the other EU states are facing new challenges and trials. However, the current migration crisis has much in common with all-Russia migration crises as a whole and the migration of the indigenous population from the territory of the Estonian Province in particular at the turn of the 19th — 20th centuries. They have similarities both in migration types and in the transnational aspect. In this article I offer an overview of the very first 5 author materials published in the Estonian periodicals in the years 1883—1910 to try to answer the question: “Has the Caucasus been a kind of promised land for the Estonian settlers?” The article includes quotations from the Estonian newspapers of the abovementioned period translated by me into Russian that were not familiar to the Russian reader before and contains some illustrations as well to represent the situation. The relevance of the article is determined by the current migration crisis and interest in the human experience in its overcoming at the turn of the 19th — 20th centuries.
