Aegis: a Skin/Shield — a Trophy — an Apotrope — a Symbol of Power?
Annotation
This article aims to re-examine perceptions of the image of aegis in ancient Greek mythology. Although various deities, including Zeus and Apollo, carry aegis in Homeric epics, it is usually associated with the goddess Athena. It is the aegis of Athena which we most frequently see in ancient texts and visual representations, and Athena’s aegis has been the main focus of corresponding modern studies. By approaching the aegis of Athena as a multi-layer semantic emblem, the author proposes to also consider it as a symbol of power. Adopted father augmented Aegis Athens turns into a complex and capacious way of detecting a plurality of meanings and layers of time.
