The Fayd of the Baliff Walgarten and the Trade Interests of Narva
Annotation
The action of disobedience of the bailiff of Narva Heidenreich von Walgarten against the Livonian Order has coincided on time with the private war (fayd) of the brothers Waldhaus von Herze, but it was different in nature. The bailiff tried to optimize the trading of Narva and extended to his subordinates the hanseatic privilege of freedom of movement (“pure path”) which it did not possess because of its non-hanseatic status. The trade activity of its citizens was blocked by major Livonian cities, led by Revel, which defended the customs bonded by the Russian-Livonian treaties. Narva was one of the main centers of the “unusual” trading and therefore had an interest in changing the legal basis of the Hanseatic trade, than it was supported by the bailiff. In 1475—1476 he actually discharged of the official representatives of the Order from negotiations with the Great Novgorod, and acting as a mediator, has put forward the demand for free trade to his subordinates. Revel and the management of the Livonian Order had been forced to give up, but the success was the result of limited opposition of Hansa, in particular by the resolutions of Hansetag in 1476.
