Domestic and foreign policy of US President Donald Trump is bound up to the solution of the proclaimed goal of “Make America Great Again”. One of its main priorities is the fight against the deficit of foreign trade. Being the largest trade partner of America, the European Union faced the unprecedented pressure of Washington, with its threats to impose high tariffs on European goods and demands to eliminate “unfair”, in its opinion, barriers to the American export to Europe. This struggle does not take into account either the sad American experience of high import tariffs, which led to the global depression of 1929, or attempts to limit import of Japanese cars in the 1970s-1980s, which led to the deep crisis of the American automobile industry. The trade war also negatively affected political relations between the US and its allies, including not only the EU, but also NATO.
