Annotation

The study was carried out with the financial support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research within the framework of project No. 18-09-00511.

The range of activities of the translators to whom the study is devoted was quite broad. First of all, they were engaged in the translation of foreign diplomatic documents into Russian. Translators also translated Russian charters into foreign languages. In some cases, translators of the Ambassadorial Prikaz were appointed bailiffs for foreign diplomats. Some of them had to provide various rarities for the tsar's everyday life, while others had to take direct part in military operations. In the main body of articles, the authors indicate specialists who worked permanently in Moscow, were sent to other countries with embassies, were seconded from the Ambassadorial Prikaz to regiments or performed other, time-limited assignments, as well as those who worked for a long time in Novgorod, Pskov, Smolensk and Arkhangelsk. In total, the main body includes 158 biographies (together with auxiliary sections - 340 biographies). This work is the first in historiography to attempt to reconstruct the full staff of translators of the diplomatic service of the Moscow state during its heyday.
