Interrelation between Interbank Payment Systems and Eurasian Integration Processes
Annotation

In anticipation of a new package of Western sanctions against Belarus, the opposition in the person of Svetlana Tihanovskaya did not stand idly by. "We are discussing the possibility of disconnecting Lukashenko's regime from the SWIFT system," she said on November 16. So far, no such statements have been heard from the U.S. and the EU. However, according to some of the Belarusian media, Belarusian banks have received a letter from the National Bank, asking to connect to the Russian equivalent of SWIFT. In an interview with Eurasia.Expert, Elena Kuzmina, Dr. in political science, head of the sector of the Center for Post-Soviet Studies at IMEMO RAN, assessed the threat of SWIFT disconnection for Belarus, and how Minsk will be able to overcome such restrictions.
