The article examines the origins of the concept of Asiopa, which has become famous in the Russian culture as a "negative twin" of the idea of Eurasia. The term "Asiopa" itself was invented by the Russian liberal Europeanist Pyotr Milyukov, who repeatedly used it in the 1920s – 1930s in the emigre polemic with the Eurasians. The author of the article believes that "Asiopa" is only a late terminological marker of the historiosophical concept of "bad synthesis of civilizations", which dates back to the "Alexander era" and is a consequence of the collapse of the progressive illusions of the Russian educated class in connection with the counter-reforms of the late Alexander I and the growth of the so called "Arakcheevism" ... Early Decembrist circles - in particular, the literary and theatrical society "Green Lamp" (1819-1820) became an important source of ideas of "bad synthesis". Its intellectual leader was the diplomat, journalist and art critic Alexander Dmitrievich Ulybyshev (1794-1858), and an active member was the young writer Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin (1799-1837), who remained faithful to the traditions of “laughter culture” and intellectual quests of the "Green lamp" throughout his life.
