Hodonyms of the City of Brest: general characteristics, typification and aspects of spatial distribution
Annotation

The article presents the experience of studying, typing and analyzing the spatial distribution of the godonyms of the city of Brest. The study was conducted for the entire territory of Brest and within thirty historical parts of the city. This method allowed us to analyze the spatial features of the distribution of year-names, to trace the influence of historical and construction-architectural factors on the names of the elements of the road

network. By the example of Brest’s year-names, two types of their typing were performed: by type (street, lane, passage, avenue etc.) and by the proper names of the elements of the road network.

An analysis of the list of elements of the Brest road network showed that the city currently uses nine different types of element names. The most common within the city are streets and lane. In most cases, they bear their own names by the connection of the road with a person and by their inherent properties and qualities. The developed methodology can be applied when conducting similar studies for other settlements, primarily cities. The database collected during the performance of the work can serve for a more in-depth study of the Brest godonyms.
