Transformation of the ethnic space of Kazakhstan and Central Asia between population censuses of 1970 and 1989
Transformation of the ethnic space of Kazakhstan and Central Asia between population censuses of 1970 and 1989
Annotation

Spatial shifts in the ethnic structure of the population taking place before the collapse of the Soviet Union in Kazakhstan and the Central Asian republics created the prerequisites for large-scale ethnic transformation in this region in the post-Soviet period. The aim of the study is to identify the main trends in the transformation of the ethnic space of the region in the last two Soviet decades. During the study, the main components of the territorial structure of the ethnocultural space of the region for 1970 and 1989 were identified. The analysis technique is based on the concepts of geoethnocultural systems and ethnocontact zones developed in Russian cultural geography, the general center-periphery model, and the diachronic method, which is often used in historical and geographical research.

As a result of the study, the following directions were identified for the transformation of the ethnic space of the region in the late Soviet era. Firstly, it is the strengthening of the ethnic cores of the national geoethnocultural systems of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, covering almost the entire territory of the republics. Secondly, this is a clearer territorial design of ethnic cores of national geoethnocultural systems in the southern parts of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, and the gradual expansion of these cores to the north. Thirdly, this is a sharp decrease in the share of Russians and an increase in the share of titular peoples in the population of all republican capitals, due to which they were drawn into the ethnic cores of national geoethnocultural systems. Fourth, this is a narrowing of the space of direct influence of the Russian geoethnocultural system in the region of study.
