Typology of regions of the North-West of Russia by the level of development of the settlement system at the beginning of the 21st century
Annotation

The article presents the results of a study of the state of local resettlement systems in regions of the North-West of Russia in the period 2002–2019. This is especially true on the eve of the upcoming All-Russian population census of Russia, which will be held in autumn of 2020. In this regard, it is important to assess the state of local (district) resettlement systems to date. To achieve this goal, ranking and cluster analysis methods were applied, the last of which was carried out using the “Statistica 10” software. To study the spatial differentiation of the resettlement system of the North-West of Russia, an assessment was made of the development of the resettlement system of each region. To obtain an integrated assessment, a number of indicators were calculated that characterize the state of the level of development of the resettlement system of each district. Four groups of districts were identified according to the level of development of the resettlement system in the period 2002–2019. After that, using cluster analysis, six groups of regions of the regions of the North-West of Russia were identified by the similarity of growth dynamics and population growth over a given period of time. It was concluded that over the past period of time, the polarization of the population has increased even more, especially due to the influence of the St. Petersburg metropolitan area. At the same time, the state of depressed areas only worsened. The main factors that influenced the development of local settlement systems were the position of the districts in relation to the “poles” of growth, major transport routes, and borderland.
