Annotation

The article traces the evolution of the views of N. V. Gogol to England and its inhabitants throughout the late 1820s — early 1850s. Particular attention is paid to the formation of the historical and philosophical position of the writer, in which the generalized image of an Englishman played the role of a positive or negative example when creating a generalized image of the Russian. Gogol saw that the European civilization in the 1840s. was on the verge of an important turning point, a move toward the future. From his point of view, England was the most prepared for this future, but she demonstrated the greatest number of problems. Russia can avoid these problems. It must go its own way, using its unique advantages. The role of the Russian (future man) is clearly indicated by Gogol. He must seek and find harmony in the soul and in the world, and in this way present an important knowledge to the whole of mankind.
