The Beginnings of East-West Exchange and Trade Connections in Early Medieval Northern Europe in the 8th and 9th Centuries

Annotation

Initially the special situation of trade and exchange in the Baltic Region in the 8th century is sketched. Rather unexpectedly close connections with North-eastern Europe are established. They develop further in the second half of the century now including elements of regular trade. In the East Oriental silver had been available for some time and in the West it was introduced in the 770s. The motor for this development was the fur trade. It comprised the activities of Scandinavian traders, Finnish middlemen and trappers and most important of all, but maddening illusive, native hunters. A scrutiny of some of the find material related to these connections between the Baltic Region and the European North-East bear witness of their complexity.  Slave trade in these parts of Europe with a very thin population and great difficulties with the feeding of extra mouths was no option.
