The aim of this article is to analyze Soviet export and import plans of the second half of the 1950s, which was the time of transition from Stalin’s economic model to the Khrushchev’s one. Along with the general questions (such as regarding the volume of the Soviet external trade, its main directions and forms), the article covers such problems as creating foreign trade plans (i.e. which institutes took part in forming such plans, which institutions upheld the increase or decrease of particular foreign economic items) as well as questions regarding which domestic and global factors defined the development of the Soviet external trade at that time. The documents of the Russian State Archive of Contemporary History (RGANI) which were deposited in the materials of the fund of Political Bureau of the CPSU served as the basic sources of the present article. Due to this publication, not only new factual data is introduced into the scientific discourse, but also the integration of the material, in the form of the author’s infographics which reflects the dynamic of the Soviet external turnover, is presented. The author comes to the conclusion that due to the reforms performed by the foreign trade executive office, as well owing to Khrushchev’s abandonment of confrontation with capitalism, the USSR in the second half of the 1950s became one of the active players in the world market. However, external trade expansion had some adverse effects. Thus, significant currency expenditures which characterized active external trade, increased the volumes of export-intensive products sales, and first of all, the sale of oil resources.
