The First Englishmen in Moscow in the Second Half of the XVI — Beginning of the XVII Centuries: the Way of Living and Trade Practice
Annotation
Since Richard Chancellor’s first visit to Russia in 1553 the diaspora of Englishmen appeared in Moscow. Documents shows us an uneasy life of the first Englishmen. They were coming during the long reign of Ivan the Terrible mostly as a merchants and invited specialists. Their presence was especially significant in trade, medicine, apothecary business, construction, arts & crafts, metallurgy, military sphere. It was Moscow that saw the emergence of the first English diaspora, that was able to influence the Russian-English relations in the second half of the XVI — beginning of the XVII centuries. The heart of the small colony in Moscow was the Old English court on Varvarka.
