The article analyzes the current state of civilizational studies, the reasons of interest and at the same time skepticism towards this form of historical thinking. It makes an interpretation of the concept "civilization", gives characteristic features of strengths and weaknesses of civilized discourse and suggests possible and relevant prospects of civilization studies.
