In the article the author analyzes French interpretation of relations between the power and the social movement during the reign of Alexandre III. The opinions of French historians of the reasons, the preparation and the course of conservative reforms in 1880-1890 and the reaction of the society are under consideration in the article. The author gives special attention to scientific debates in French historiography about the results of the conservative reforms and their role in the process of modernization of the country.
