Cairo in January 2018: City, People, Books
Annotation

Cairo is one of the great cities of the world, home to separate architectural monuments and to whole architectural complexes formed in various historical settings. The author encountered and studied one such ensemble in January 2018, and watched the lives of Cairenes—some of whom he interviewed. Cairo is also one of the book capitals of the Arab world, and the author had an opportunity to take part in Cairo’s annual International Book Fair, where he was fortunate enough to acquire two valuable editions of Arabic poetry and prose. The article shows how both Cairo itself and the everyday culture of its inhabitants are a peculiar mix of modernity and tradition.
