Matteo Ripa and His Travel to China: Extracts from the Logbook
Annotation

Matteo Ripa (1682–1746) was an Italian priest and a Catholic missionary who, obeying the decision of the Holy See, together with other missionaries from the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of Faith travelled to China, where he bore witness to events that gave birth to the so-called Chinese Rites controversy. While Matteo Ripa’s memoir, Giornale, is an important source on the history of China, no less interesting are excerpts from the logbook he maintained during his travel to the Middle Kingdom. Father Ripa methodically documented what he saw, gave a detailed account of events and included in the text of his journal drawings of various types of fauna and fruit that were a curiosity for Europeans of his time. In this article, excerpts from Matteo Ripa’s travel journal are published in Russian for the first time.
