GENDER DIMORPHISM IN COLOR TERMINOLOGIES OF PEOPLES OF THE CAUCASUS
Annotation
The article is a case study within a broad fi eld of connections between color and culture, which is referred to as anthropology of color. It explores the interrelations between gender and age factors, and quantitative indicators of usage of various color-marked terms. The analysis draws on data collected during 1989-1993 fi eldwork sessions among peoples of the North Caucasus, Dagestan, and Georgia. The author argues that the phenomenon of gender dimorphism, which is revealed as a result of the study, manifests itself variously in ways spanning from specifi c types of color categorization in language to psychological and emotional attitudes toward color.
