Formation of Gospel Genre in T.A. Dorsey's Creative Activity (120th Anniversary of Composer)

The major subjects and images and also style features of traditional Afro-American religious music were reflected in a gospel – a genre national, and later the author's song of the Afro-Americans which began the development in Afro-American church environment in the middle of the 19th century. Important spiritual and moral values and ideals of ethnos, its consciousness, character, stereotypes of behavior, transferred from generation to generation, were imprinted in a gospel. It gained the identity in the first half of the 20th century, and the main merit in it belongs to composer T.E. Dorsey. This major genre of Afro-American music which entered a world musical treasury was created in works of Dorsey. The gospel still plays an important role in church and household music of the Afro-Americans and serves as a musical symbol of their ethnoculture. This genre represents one of the most considerable deep layers of culture of Black community, serves the most important component of multinational culture of the USA and the basis of formation of consciousness of the Afro-Americans strengthening a spiritual bond of generations and eras. At the same time the cultural wealth of the people remains and develops by means of a gospel traditional Afro-American music and is broadcast in modern sociocultural space. Dorsey's contribution is significant not only because he created classical samples of a gospel, but also attracted national and universal interest in Afro-American folklore music and changed cultural and social policy of the USA in the relation to art heritage of black Americans.
