The lecture deals with the problem of mutual perception by students of Russian history from Moscow and St. Petersburg. The author demonstrates that the confrontation and peculiar features of the historical schools of Moscow and St. Petersburg were due to the difference in the mentality of academic communities ofthose two capitals, that had formed under the influence of local cultural environment. The author analyzes as well images of Moscow and St. Petersburg, formed among leading Russian historians of late 19th – early 20th centuries.
